NBC’s David Gregory is finding himself the subject of a police investigation after an interview he conducted on Sunday. During a segment on Meet the Press on which he debated the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre, Gregory brandished a 30-round firearm magazine, and held it in view of the show’s cameras.
High-capacity magazines are illegal in Washington DC. DC Official Code 7-2506.01 states:
(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term large capacity ammunition feeding device shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.
Meet the Press is filmed in Washington DC. During the interview, David Gregory held up a firearms magazine and stated, “Here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets.”
As a result, David Gregory is now the subject of an investigation by the Washington Metropolitan Police Department.
Legal Insurrection has reported that an email from the Metropolitan Police states that NBC had requested permission to use the ammunition magazine on the show, but was denied:
NBC contacted MPD inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazines is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated. Thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.
Those on the left side of the gun control debate have, ironically, begun to wonder what the big deal is. Columnist Howard Kurtz called the investigation “a waste of time.” In a sarcasm-laden article, Gawker‘s Robert Kessler concluded that the Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident “because there’s no other crimes to investigate.”
The duality of liberal logic in this case is simply astonishing. A true liberal in favor of strict gun control regulations should be the ones demanding Gregory’s arrest. They should be insisting that this incident be investigated.
The fact that he had no criminal intent by having possession the magazine does not matter. David Gregory and the producers of Meet the Press are no more above the law than anyone else.
Of course it’s ridiculous. That’s what millions of law-abiding gun-owners are trying to tell you.
